A Very Happy Birthday

Last July 16, I celebrated my birthday with my hubby and friends.

It was just a simple bonding moment for us where we had some native foods and drinks to satisfy our hunger pangs and some chitchat moment after. And of course the never-ever forgotten picture taking of the bash for friendster and facebook purposes for my friends and blogging use for me! Lol!

Anyways, here are some of the photos.

We almost had the same foods like that of Nikko’s birthday ( one of my mates ) but had a different venue to give us a more fresher view. Overall, I was really happy that day because I’ve realized that I have so many wonderful people around me and even online.

For all those who remembered that day ... thank you very much! :)

XoXo :)

Blood Sugar Counts

Many of you knew that my mom has been suffering from diabetes. Well, first she had Lupus and now diabetes as its complication.

That’s why blood glucose monitors are all around the house, to see to it that my mom’s blood sugar is at its tolerable level. I still remember one time when we haven’t bought any glucose meter then. My mom suddenly starting sweating and felt nauseate with some mild weakness in her body. I know by then that something was wrong. We immediately called her doctor and told us to get by the nearest lab or clinic to check my mom’s blood sugar. True enough, her blood sugar was low. So we immediately gave her some orange juice and candy to heighten things up.

Ugrh! And because of that, we immediately bought a glucometer for her daily use, though we really want to try electrodes which many has proven very effective. Well, we'll see about that.

2 Down.. 2 more to Go?

Two of my loots from Faye arrived today..

Here they are!

~Coach Graffiti Sling Bag and Coach Signature Wallet~

I was overwhelmed when these babies arrived and now I’m eagerly excited for the 2 bags on August! Lol! :)

Custom Jewerly Rings

My cousin Louisa will have her much awaited wedding this December and as early as today she already called some specialists and suppliers for that special day. She really want to make her wedding the best ever that’s why she’d chosen the best amongst the rest.

First on her list and her most priority is the wedding ring. She plans to have some costume jewelry rings for the ceremony and have it perfectly crafted for the special occasion. Good thing, her mom is an expert of choosing the best jeweler and has ordered the pair just last night. Of course, you might think that having a custom designed ring is that expensive huh? Well, the jeweler that her mom hired was kind enough to give them some discount! Lol! Cool! Now, Louisa only needs 1-2-3 I mean several suppliers to choose from for the rest of the ceremony!lol!

Unconditional Love

This is my son Aj and my niece Lyka.

This photo was shot last June 6 at my brother’s wedding ( while waiting for the entourage and for the ceremony to begin ).

Just look how they really care for each other.. such a sweet sight isn’t? :) Lyka just loves her Kuya and so is Aj. A child’s love is truly unconditional..

High Hopes

My cousin Trisha recently stopped her schooling because of their migration to Canada.
She’s actually on her 2nd year now in Nursing and unfortunately has to stop to come with her family. Trisha was one of my favorite cousins and I consider her as one of my best friends. That’s why hearing the news that she is not attending school worries me, especially she’s one good student.

That’s why I tried to find ways to help her attend school while she’s still in the state of adjustment in her new home. And I think you know what I recommended her to do, right? Yes! I told her to get a degree online in the internet. Well, there are many reputable online schools nowadays that can substitute an actual university.

Anyways, I gave her the details and she’s willing to take the shot! With that, I want to wish her good luck! :)

Week Long Vacation

I’ve been so stressed lately – especially because another boss has added to my loads! Lol! And this time I really hate her. I’ll tell you more about her when I get the chance.

Now, back to my stress story! Lol! :) Things are getting so uncool at the office lately. Why? Because my loads got double but my compensation didn’t! Worst, my bosses thought that we don’t need a salary increase or even hire another staff to cover up some work loads. Urgh!

I’m so sick and tired of their lame excuses that we don’t to add another staff because we’re underutilized or something like you’re not doing your job well! Well, for God sake I’ve been with the company for so many years now that I can’t see the point of me not performing well, right?

Anyways, I think I really need to take some day off from work. Like a week or two and go to the beach or a spa to lighten up my spirit and freshen up my mind. But I think a week long family vacation is all I need to ease my traumas and tantrums! lol! :)

We’ll see about that

I Want a DLSR!

I really need a camera! Urgh! A camera is a must for a blogger! I guess everyone of us here knows that, right?

You see I used to have a Canon digital camera but unfortunately it cannot take any decent photos anymore! We asked Canon service center about it and they said the lens needs repair. But I had doubts and just thought of buying a dlsr than have it repaired.

I was eyeing on Nikon D40 because it’s the most affordable dlsr in the market but when I saw Nikon D90 and when a friend suddenly told me that I can buy it cheaper ( she said I can have it with the price of a D40 ) I immediately ask her to reserve one for me! :)

Unfortunately, the D90 is not yet available but I still have high hopes that I can have it this month till next month. But if I can’t take the waiting anymore I’ll be buying the D40 and I’ll be posting lots of pictures by then! :)Well, I’ve been reading lots of reviews lately and the D40 is still worth buying for. :)

Broken Tooth

My cousin Danny just had an appointment with his Plano Dentist yesterday. He’ll be having a cosmetic dental makeover by wednesday because of his broken front tooth ( sorry I don’t know the term for that ).

Anyways, he had an accident last week while playing basketball. They were having their training when one of his teammates accidentally hit him in the face thereby breaking of his tooth! Urgh! I bet that really hurts huh?!

Oh well, all I can say is goodluck to you cuz!

Anyways, so much for that, time for me to sneak in some photos from my simple bday celebration last Thursday. :)

Everyday Counts

Gosh! Tomorrow is the 3rd week of July and an a few months it’s Christmas! Woot!

Time really flies so fast these days! It was just like yesterday when I thought of what to do on my birthday and now 3 days had passed. I say, we’ll just wake up one day doing some Halloween invitations for a Halloween party or better yet buy some gifts for Christmas! Lol!

Anyways, the only point here is we should make everyday a special day and make it fruitful, for we can never go back to the past and live it again. For we live only once and with that we should make the most out of it! :)

Diet Lies You Must Know

Are They True?

I just saw this article about diet lies. I think some of you might want to check it out.. :)

1. Coffee

Claim: Coffee is a weight-loss drink. Drinking two cups a day can reduce appetite and make workouts feel less taxing, helping you exercise longer and burn as much as 31 percent more fat.

Truth: “Caffeine or coffee alone has not been demonstrated in rigorous trials to reduce appetite,” says Dr. Saper. Research shows, though, that drinking caffeine can increase endurance, helping you exercise longer. Researchers aren’t sure why.

2. Fitness Water

Claim: Water and “fitness water” prime the body for weight loss. Drinking water boosts metabolism, staves off hunger and prevents fatigue, protecting you from overeating when tired. The vitamins and minerals in fitness water also help keep your body’s fat-melting systems functioning well.

Truth: “Ha, ha, ha,” says William Rumpler, Ph.D., a research physiologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Diet and Performance Laboratory. Translation: If just drinking regular or fitness water did all that, we’d all be thin.

3. Yeast

Claim: Eating less yeast can help you lose up to five pounds a week. Too much yeast in the system can cause bloating, fatigue, mood swings, cravings, lower metabolism and weight gain. Getting yeast levels under control through a diet low in sugars and high in yogurt, broccoli, garlic and other vegetables and protein can reverse these effects and speed weight loss.

Truth: It’s nonsense to claim that lowering yeast levels causes the body to shed fat, says Jack Sobel, M.D., chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. It’s also silly to claim that eating alkaline vegetables, yogurt or garlic can retard yeast growth. Taking antibiotics can trigger yeast infections. Taking birth control pills can also cause them on rare occasions. “A diet high in sugar can trigger them in women who are already susceptible,” says Dr. Sobel. “But for everyone else, sugar consumption has no effect on yeast. And it’s nonsense to say that yeast infections cause weight gain, carb cravings, low energy or mood swings.”

4. Selenium

Claim: Taking selenium revs metabolism, helping you drop pounds. Stress, illness or bad nutrition can overwork the thyroid and adrenal glands, causing low energy, slow metabolism and weight gain. Taking 200 micrograms of selenium daily can dramatically improve glandular function and increase energy and calorie burn.

Truth: Low thyroid function can result in slower metabolism and weight gain. But it isn’t caused by stress, illness or bad nutrition. It is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder, congenital defect, hormonal problem or damage to the thyroid. As for selenium, “We know it is an essential component of enzymes that activate and deactivate the thyroid hormone,” says Wayne C. Hawkes, Ph.D., a research chemist with the USDA/ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center. “But there’s no evidence that taking supplements will improve thyroid function and help you lose weight.” In one study Dr. Hawkes found that men taking high levels of selenium (297 micrograms daily) began gaining weight, while those taking low doses (14 micrograms) began to lose. This suggests that taking high doses, if it has any effect, may cause a mild form of low thyroid function, the condition it’s supposed to cure.

5. Cranberry Juice

Claim: Cranberry juice is high in antioxidants that help maintain the skin’s connective tissue and prevent cellulite from forming. Drinking eight ounces daily can significantly diminish dimpling in just three weeks.

Truth: Cranberries are rich in a class of antioxidants called proanthocyanidins that help prevent bacteria from sticking to cells. “This means less dental plaque, fewer ulcers and fewer urinary tract infections,” says Amy Howell, Ph.D., a research scientist at Rutgers University’s Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research. Proanthocyanidins also help maintain connective tissue. “But there are no studies of any kind showing any relationship between cranberries and cellulite,” says Dr. Howell. Drinking 10 ounces of cranberry juice daily can help prevent bacterial infections, but it won’t do a thing for your thighs.

6. Ingesting HCA

Claim: Ingesting HCA can reduce fat-cell formation by 70 percent for up to 12 hours after a meal. A compound called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) found in the juice and rinds of citrus fruits inhibits the action of an enzyme that converts blood sugar to fat, reducing the body’s ability to create new fat cells.

Truth: HCA can impede the formation of fat cells in a test tube, but it’s unclear whether it works the same way in humans. “At this point the evidence is contradictory,” says Dr. Saper. It’s also unclear whether most citrus juices and rinds even contain HCA, which is found primarily in the purple Malabar tamarind, a tropical fruit native to India.

Katmandu Vacation

We had a chat again with my SIL Gail last night. She was planning to have a vacation/ birthday gift for herself this September at Katmandu where she can get Outer Banks rentals. She’ll be turning 30 this year and she hopes to celebrate it by relaxing outside the country with “us” her family. But unfortunately, we can’t make it because of some visa problems and of course with our work schedule.

So, we told her to just enjoy her vacation without us and maybe next time we can join her there. :)(sayang!)

Safety Tips

Have you heard about AED lately?

Well, my boss just bought a business package of it lately for a new meat processing plant. One of my officemate attended a seminar about safety and CPR and the city government advised us to have a first aid kit or a CPR kit as preparation for any emergency situation.

Good thing, we my boss was able to acquire a complete package in a very affordable price. The kit will arrive next week and we’ll be ready for installation by then.

Tests We Shouldn't Miss

The most important health tests for you.

Essential Screenings

Going to the doctor when you're sick is a no-brainer. But going when you're perfectly fine can be a lifesaver. "People who schedule routine visits get the best preventive services, and that sets the stage for success," says Jonathan Temte, MD, PhD, associate professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, in Madison. Screening tests are crucial: Your chances of beating virtually any condition are much greater when you catch it in its earliest stages -- when it's most treatable or even curable. Use this chart as a guide, but discuss your personal history and specific needs with your doctor.

Blood Pressure

When to go: All adults should have their blood pressure checked every two years (every 6-12 months if you have hypertension).

How to prep: Arrive with five minutes to spare and take a few deep breaths while you wait. Stress and anxiety can falsely inflate the results.
What comes next: A healthy pressure is 120/80 or less, 140/90 is considered high, and in between is "prehypertension." Since high blood pressure ups your risk of stroke and heart attack, if you have it your doctor will likely tell you to lose weight, exercise, change your diet, limit alcohol intake, and quit smoking (which all lower blood pressure) before putting you on medication.

Colorectal Cancer

When to go: Men and women need an initial screening at age 50 (21 if you have a family history). The gold standard is a colonoscopy every 10 years (more often if at high risk). A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a substitute, but colonoscopy reaches higher in the colon where cancer is more often found in women.

How to prep: For a colonoscopy, maintain a special liquid diet and drink a colon-clearing solution for one to two days. A sigmoidoscopy requires only two enemas the morning of the appointment.
What comes next: If polyps are spotted, they're removed and biopsies are taken of anything abnormal. Questionable spots in sigmoidoscopy are looked at more closely with a colonoscopy.

Cholesterol

When to go: An overall lipoprotein profile is recommended at age 20 and every five years after that. Children with a family history of high cholesterol can be tested too.

How to prep: It's a simple blood test, but you need to fast for 10-12 hours before, so make it easier on yourself by scheduling an early morning appointment.
What comes next: Total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL; LDL (bad) less than 100; HDL (good) higher than 40; triglycerides below 150. High total and LDL levels cause buildup on artery walls and block oxygen and blood flow, increasing heart attack risk. Your doctor may suggest changing your diet, increasing activity, and a retest in 3 to 6 months before considering medication.

Blood Sugar

When to go: Beginning at age 45 you should be screened every three years -- sooner if you're overweight, have a family history of diabetes, or had gestational diabetes.

How to prep: You need to fast for at least eight hours before the blood test.
What comes next: Below 100 mg/dL is ideal, 100-125 is "prediabetes," and 126 or higher indicates diabetes. Losing weight, exercising, and changing your diet is often the first plan of action for lowering high blood glucose and may delay (or eliminate) the need for medication.

Bone Density

When to go: Women 65 and older should be tested -- earlier if osteoporosis runs in your family, or you have a small frame or have taken steroids.

How to prep: You don't need to prepare for the scans, which are quick and painless.
What comes next: If your numbers reveal low bone density, the next steps are typically blood tests to check calcium and vitamin D levels. Your doctor may also recommend weight-bearing exercises, or calcium supplements or other medications that boost bone density or slow loss.

Breast Cancer

When to go: Women in their 20s and 30s need a clinical breast exam at least every three years. A yearly mammogram should be added at age 40. If you're at high risk, talk to your doctor.

How to prep: Avoid deodorant, creams, or powders the day of your mammogram.
What comes next: If the radiologist spots something atypical, follow-up options vary. An ultrasound, diagnostic mammogram (which involves more x-ray images), breast biopsy (typically an outpatient procedure), or MRI may be performed.

Cervical Cancer

When to go: Women should have a Pap test every one to two years after the onset of sexual activity, but no later than 21. If you're 30 or older and have had three normal tests in a row, you can get tested every two to three years.

How to prep: Get the Pap when you're not menstruating, and avoid douches, vaginal creams, lubricants, intercourse, and tampons for two days before.
What comes next: If cells look irregular, your follow-up depends on what changes were spotted and the degree of concern. If your changes don't look serious, your doctor may decide to simply repeat the Pap test a few months later (some cellular abnormalities clear up on their own). Or you may get a colposcopy, which uses a magnifying scope to better examine the cervix.

You are drawn toward close, one-on-one relationships. You crave a partner - romantic or otherwise.
